Pittsburgh Hofbräuhaus

Posted By Kate on July 6, 2009

Several weeks ago, Chad and I got to experience the Pittsburgh Hofbräuhaus in all of its glory with some Pittsburgh-based family and friends…and needless to say, we’ll be back. Germany is no stranger to beer or those who thoroughly enjoy it, so what better place to go and enjoy some frosty beers ourselves.

Although very crowded on a summery Saturday night in Pittsburgh, we landed a sweet picnic table in the Beer Garden outside by the water.  Coincidentally enough, the table right next to us was full of Erieites, too!

Throughout the night we ordered a few rounds – I love wheats, so of course I got the Munich Weizen and Chad got the Dunkel (which I tried and liked) - but it seems no matter what your choice libation was, the large beer mugs made it even better! We ordered some of the Pretzels with Bier Cheese (delicious!), Fritierte Gewürz Gurken aka Fried Pickles (not bad for someone who doesn’t eat pickles), and everyone at the table ordered some rendition of pretzel sandwich.  Although the menu was limited in the Beer Garden, they still had a decent selection, however, I’m looking forward to experiencing the full menu in the future. A side note: I was at the Munich Hofbrauhaus back in 1999, so I experienced the real deal at a much younger age incapable of fully appreciating where I was, however I can say this is an awesome firsthand look into where it all began.

Towards the end of our evening, 4 of us decided to take on the “Shotski.”  With shotglasses affixed to a large wooden ski filled with your shot of choice, it’s a simultaneous group experience that will leave with you a little buzz in addition to fond memories for years to come.

This regional gem is definitely an outing well-worth its weight in beer and I can guarantee the inside holds even more in store for us during our next visit.

Below are some snapshots from our first visit there.

Prost!

  1. Glad to see you had a fun time down here. I finally made a trip there last Wednesday for the tapping of the seasonal keg. Now THAT is an event you need to see. There is a parade with folks in authentic German swag, restaurant wide toasts and many many MANY shotskis going on.

    cheers!
